With the arrival of Gorgo and the Spartans, Themistocles overpowers Artemisia and kills her, although not before giving her a chance to surrender, feeling it would be a shame to kill her. However, Ephialtes approaches them with news of the Greek fleet gathering in Salamis, lead by Themistocles. His success and prestige have made him confident, yet slightly arrogant. He encourages his men to take a stand. In Athens, Xerxes gloats of his triumph over the Greeks, but Artemisia is less enthusiastic over her failure to sway Themistocles to her side. He was able to match Artemisia in combat, and eventually defeated her. When he emerges again, he appears as a nine foot tall being draped in gold. Legendary Pictures has announced that Frank Miller is writing the follow-up graphic novel, and Zack Snyder was interested in directing the adaptation, but chose to move on to develop and direct the Superman reboot Man of Steel. Artemisia has her general cuffed and thrown overboard for his incompetence, and recruits another in his place. In a council meeting, he asserts that the Greek city states must unite against the Persian threat, and that he requires a substantial fleet. Returning to Athens, he learns from his friend Scyllias that Artemisia is leading the Persian fleet. After, Themistocles rejects her. During the battle, Artemisia shoots Scyllias with an arrow, killing him. One night, Persians approach the Greek camp and inform Themistocles that Artemisia's ship is moored in neutral waters. Themistocles and Gorgo subsequently unite and lead the Greek forces into battle. She commands the priests to bless Xerxes and sends him into the desert. His tactics also allowed him to exploit certain weaknesses in the Persian Navy, something he did so well that Artemisia described it as being very graceful. Nevertheless, she is set on fulling her desire to wipe out the Greeks. Gorgo ponders this as she weeps.
